From the Archive: 1965 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia | 2013 Daytona Turkey Rod Run

This is a ’65 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia that was at the 2013 Daytona Turkey Rod Run. The Karmann Ghia is a compact car that was made by German coach builder Karmann and Italian designer Ghia, which is where Volkswagen got the name Karmann Ghia. It was made between 1955 and 1974, but the first prototype was made in 1953. Volkswagen was originally going to make 4,000 of the Karmann Ghia, but they sold out pretty quickly. Because of this, Volkswagen decided to mass produce the car. A total of 445,238 were made in Germany between 1955 and 1974. There are also 41,689 that were made in Brazil from 1962 to 1974. The engine of this one is a 1.2 liter flat-4 that produces 40 horsepower and 65 pound-feet of torque. The transmission is a 4-speed manual. The top speed is 75 mph.
